The mating battle is the most exciting thing to witness in the animal kingdom.  This was no less than a dozen male Humpback whales chasing a single female.  Each was pushing and shoving to get into position with her.  Great battles like these may last for hours.  There is a lot of above water action because the whales are exerting more energy, thus requiring more oxygen.  The head lunge and breach are the male Humpback whale’s most common behaviors during these battles.  It is common to see bleeding in the nose areas of the whales.
